martinique-casinosThere are two casinos on the beautiful French island of Martinique. If you plan to go be sure to bring your passport or similar ID with you. You must be 21 years old to gamble in Martinique. An important travel tip – if you see billboards that just say “Casino” and follow their directions, you will wind up at the supermarket! Casino and Casino Geante are the names of a chain of supermarkets and discount stores.

The larger and more elegant casino, the Casino Bateliere Plaza is in the city of Schoelcher, named after the man who obtained freedom for the island’s slaves. It is housed in what looks like a large plantation house. You enter an elegant lobby with a domed ceiling and marble floor, surrounded by the casino’s 144 gambling machines. The slots open at 10 AM seven days a week, and stay open till 3 AM every night except for Fridays and Saturdays when the casino is open till 4 AM. The ten gaming tables open at 8PM. The table offerings are American Roulette, Blackjack, Poker, and Caribbean stud poker. Below the gaming floor there is a Karaoke Bar, as well as a piano bar.
The Bateliere Plaza is also famous for its food and spectacular entertainment. The restaurant, Club Seven, serves French and Creole food. It opens for lunch from noon to 2:30 PM, and again for dinner from 7 PM until midnight. In 2000, the Casino received an International Arch of Europe Award for Excellence and Quality. The owners of the casino, a French company called Groupe Cogit, began a 3million euro renovation in the spring of 2014.

Casino Trois-Islets is a smaller establishment on the other side of Fort-de-France. It has 70 gaming machines, two roulette tables and two blackjack tables. It is open from 11 AM to 3 AM, seven days a week, with tables opening at 9 PM. It also has a restaurant, Le Farniente, open Tuesday to Saturday from 7:30 PM till midnight. Trois-Islets opens its dance floor on weekends in the summer.
Casino Trois-Islets used to be located in the Hotel Meridien, and you will still find listings for it there. Meridien sold the hotel to the Kalenda group, which pulled out in 2007. The hotel stood empty for years, and is scheduled to be pulled down. The Casino itself was purchased by Groupe Cogit, who also own the Bateliere Plaza. It is now housed in a French Quarter style building on the Rue des Bouganviliers.
